Those hairy ones!

The Beatles in the 60's were a theme present in the lives of many Portuguese families including my parents but the 1st memory I have of the Beatles dates back only to the end of the decade, around my 10 / 12 years, and it's the one my father to tell my mother that "I would never allow my children to walk around like those hairy ones"... Well!!

And so?

The reality is that the music of these hairy men was so captivating that it quickly spread around the world as if it were a virus and, amazingly, people hair, like the Beatles hair, with age was growing until, imagine, it became fashion... Well!! smiley icon10

Extravagant

David Bowie wasn't one of the chosen ones from my teenage years... Some of his albums passed by my house but none imposed themselves, eventually just because it didn't happen, there was a lot of music on offer, there were always friends to exchange and borrow albums and some vinyls they rarely used the needle... However, in the turn of the 70s Bowie jumped into the new wave pop spirit with the LP "Scary Monsters" and then in 83 with the super commercial "Let's Dance", went headlong into the wave as they say and, with that art/glam/pop rock style, he began to have a greater prominence in the media, especially on the radios that broadcast his music with great frequency...

An episode that illustrates this greater 'democratization' of Bowie's music dates back to the late 1980s when someone painted on the wall of the kindergarten in front of the Espinho hospital, in letters that could be read for miles... "THIS IS NOT AMERICA"... A memory that I carry forever because I went there for years every day on my way to work... smiley

Also interesting to note, in the mid 70's a music magazine was born in Portugal, if I'm not mistaken it was called "Música & Som", which I bought from time to time, even since the 1st issue... It has several passages of that I remember and one of them was about Bowie's music... Someone used to say that for a while, in the 60s, nobody cared anything about the artist's music until one day he came up with the idea of dressing extravagantly for a live show and the thing have turned out well... So well that it caught the attention of critics, they talked about it, it was broadcast more often on the radio and the Bowie fans soon multiplied...

The funny thing is that, he already had the talent but few noticed him, it took an ability to be noticed which leads me to conclude that many talents will have been by the way and will have been erased forever because they didn't have the luck of a click, a slight highlight, a small detail that would have catapulted them to the knowledge of the general public...

Today the thing is quite different, talent is hunted in another way in these TV shows that reach the 'masses' strongly... It will certainly be positive in some aspects and less positive in others and whoever writes in the future the history of the present will evaluate it but what I really like is the talents that 'make' themselves, at least at start-up, by hand as they say... These days, they go to youtube and here goes of this... Alessia Cara is a good example...

Gal Costa

Divine, wonderful!

Magic Mirror, on the wall, who *now*, is the greatest singer of all?
No, this isn't Gal's style, she would never play this game, but I'll answer for her...

Gal Costa and Bethânia are, in my opinion, the two greatest Brazilian singers of all time... Before them, Brazilians had Carmem Miranda and Elis Regina as their biggest reference, but the two Bahian women grew up as performers in the best era of Brazilian music benefiting from composers such as Caetano, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim, Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Caymmi and many more...

In my youth I bought albums by Caetano, Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim, Vinicios de Moraes, Bethânia and even Rita Lee, the latter of which to give on my future wife's birthdays... Incredibly, not one of Gal's albums was part of my preferences and I don't remember the first time I heard about her, but I know it was before Gal performed the main theme of the soap opera Gabriela because tracks from the album India and other previous albums that were also famous were shown on the radio a lot... It's been a few years, time has passed and memories are fading... smiley

Meanwhile, 12 years ago, I made a selection of songs performed by Gal ( here ) which I now take more seriously on this page dedicated to the artists who emerged in the 60s... All this helps to preserve my good memories...

And finally, I transcribe here next what I wrote a decade ago... "Words for what? Gal is really special..."

Gal Costa, the eternal muse of Tropicália

gal250

With full hair, a wide smile and sensual lips, Gal immortalized songs by his dear friend Caetano Veloso, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque and Milton Nascimento, among many other Brazilian composers, throughout his 57-year career.

An intuitive singer, because she never studied singing, Gal attributed a great influence on her style to the father of bossa nova, João Gilberto from Bahia, who after an impromptu audition told her: “You are the greatest singer in Brazil”, as she herself said.

Due to the timbre of her voice and delicate tuning, Gal became the muse of tropicalism, but it was her transgressive sensuality during the dictatorship, specifically in the show “Fa-tal” (1971), that earned her the title of “muse of desbunde”, even being compared to Janis Joplin.

With an act – sometimes showing her breasts – and her sensual and colorful costumes or her “black power” hair, Gal built an artistic identity that transformed her into a sex symbol, abandoning the shyness of her youth.

After tropicalismo, Gal went through different phases, from interpreting the most popular sambas during carnival, through rock’n’roll, soul, disco to dozens of songs for famous soap operas.

HELPLESS

My story with Neil Young begins when my friend Quim Camarinha lends me 4 LPs, among them was CSN&Y's “Déjà Vu”… I can't specify that date but I Know it happens around 1976/77 because when in 1978 comes out the “Comes a Time” album, already I am a big fan of Young's music… Meantime, I remember hearing the 4 discs in a short time of glance and having put them back there forgotten on the shelf until the day when Jorge Iglésias went to our house… When Jorge picks up the Déjà Vu album he makes an exclamation of the kind “Hey man, this is very good!”. smiley

Et voilà, that's how I started to pay attention to the exceptional music of these 4 guys and soon after I dedicated myself more exclusively to Neil Young to the point of collecting all his LPs and having asked to come from Canada, by my cousin Luís Alves the albums I couldn't buy in Portugal, including the Buffalo Springfields albums… All this lasted for a good few years, until the mid-80s…

Back to the past, around 1978 a film was shown at the old Teatro São Pedro in Espinho, named "The Last Waltz", a rock concert that had been announced as being the last live performance of the group The Band… It was supposed to be only one more movie that the guys were going to see in the old São Pedro but for me it was much more…

The group The Band invited to play with them several artists including Bob Dylan who had a special performance as it should be and, after passing on stage names like Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters and Ronnie Wood among others, finally enters the scene Neil Young, which intensely moved me… In the film you can see that Robbie Robertson himself is somewhat moved by the moment…

But so, behold Young kicks off with the harmonica and the chords of HELPLESS, I can't stand the commotion and my tears fall… I still shiver at the thought of it… Helpless (Live 1976 with The Band)

Here are the albums that made me a Neil Young fan but,
for those who don't know, he's like port wine... The older the better!

When you are 18

I just started to take seriously the Rolling Stones at my 16 years old through the single "Angie" which in the summer of 74 often passed on the requested songs in the esplanade of avenue 8 in Espinho... For those who did not live the ambient of that esplanade, that left good memories in all people who passed through it, here's a link to give a slight idea of what was that space for walk and leisure on summer days and nights until the end of the 70's...

The Stones, or something like that, would never captivate me nowadays, I say, but I remember the thing very well when you are 18, and with that age everything is different... There was a kind of spell, not to like was impossible, the image they passed was assembled by a $ machine, ok but that music made to reach a layer of youth after getting into your brain it's for life... The first time you listen live chords like in "Gimme Shelter", "Honky Tonk Women" or "Jumpin' Jack Flash" you're caught... It's such a strong emotion that it's simply unforgettable... smiley
